The television gave a play-by-play of Preston Whittaker’s near-death ordeal. Cell phone videos showed Preston’s sedan sliding over the embankment while an SUV sped from the scene.

Other angles caught the car bobbing down the river. One recording showed Preston and his wife being pulled from the water by a fishing boat.

Why wouldn’t the man just die?

They’d taken a big risk with the assault in broad daylight. Hiring the two brothers might have been the biggest mistake of this operation. How had they completely missed their mark? They’d run them off the road, shot at them, and sent their car down the river, and yet Preston and his wife had walked away without a scratch.

Amateurs. So much for their supposed military training experience.

An incoming text pinged the phone on the coffee table.

What’s the plan?

Of course those two didn’t have the foggiest idea what to do next.

We wait until he lets his guard down and strike again.

Only this time, they’d better not miss, or they’d find themselves next on the hit list.
